The annual PPANI Awards will take place on Sunday of March 2019 at the Tullyglass Hotel in Ballymena. There will be a TWO full days wedding photography seminar. This is the biggest date in the diary for the PPANI and it's members.

N.B. This year is once again a print competition with exclusion of the Wedding Album Category.

Entries for the 2019 PPANI Awards Competition open on 1st January 2019 and close on Saturday 26th January 2019 at 12 noon.

Entries are to be 10x8 prints for 1st stage judging and finalists will be 20x16 mounted prints for final stage judging in March.

Each entry into the main competition costs £7.50 per image. Members are given five entries (excluding wedding album) as part of their PPANI membership.

Entry into the Wedding Album category costs £25 and you can enter as many albums as you wish.

LIVE judging will take place on Sunday 3th February 2019 at The Dunadry Hotel. Finalists will be announced soon after the 3rd February 2019.

 How to Enter the 1st Stage

Each entry is to be a 10x8 print.

Prints can be gloss, luster, metallic or fine art paper.

Prints must not be mounted.

Prints may have a border.

The image should be no smaller than 5 inches on the longest side.

On the back of each print please add a sticker with your member number (contact Steven Neeson if you don’t know your number), print title, category & sub category. (Steven Neeson has stickers made up if you need any contact him).

Put your prints into an envelopes and label the envelopes with the relevant categories and your name. Do not write names on the actual prints. Put each envelope into a suitable larger envelope and post to the following address.

Simply count up your number of entries and pay the relevant fee. Remember you get 5 free entries so deduct 5 from your final amount (NB. prints only, not album category). This will be checked so please get it right. Must be paid before posted. Entries received that have not been paid will not go forward for judging.

We will need digital copies of each entry. Please either include a USB with the digital entries on it along with your print submission or wetransfer them to treasurer@ppani.co.uk. This is very important. Please rename your files with your member number, category & sub category followed by sequence. For example, 0121_weddingreportage_01.jpg

Please note: we must have the prints, digitals and payment before the deadline. Failure to include one of these will result in entries not being submitted.

Finalists - How to enter the final stage of the competition.

Finalists will be announced after the PPANI Judging day on Sunday 3rd of February 2019.

Finalists must supply mounted prints which need to be received by a current PPANI council member no later than Wednesday 15th March 2019. Failure to provide a mounted print by this date will result in disqualification. Mounts can be window mounts or can be mounted on up to 5mm thick material. Prints must have a sticker on the rear with your member number, print title (optional), category & sub category.

Finalist's mounted prints, must be sized in the ratio of 20" x 16" . The longest side of the actual image area must not be smaller than 10 inches in size.

The image does not need to be the same ratio as the first stage competition. Further editing and paper changes is allowed at this stage. This is so entrants have the chance to correct work according to judges comments at the first stage judging .

The Process

Competition opens on the 1st of January 2019.

Entries will be made by posting your prints to The Wedding Centre, 5 Main St, Randalstown, BT41 3AB by 26th January 2019 at 12pm. You can deliver the prints in person between 9.30am and 5pm Tuesday - Saturday.

Competition closes on the 26th of January 2019 at 12noon.

All entries will be judged by official judges, on Sunday 3th February to determine five finalists for each category. You are encouraged to watch the judging.

All finalists will be announced the following day after 3th February.

All finalists must create their 20x16 mounted prints and deliver them to a council member by Wednesday 13th March 2019.

All mounted prints will be judged on the eve of the PPANI awards by three experienced and qualified judges.

The winners will be announced on Sunday 24th of March 2019 at the 2019 PPANI Awards Ceremony. You must be at the awards or organise for someone to collect your award.

Wedding albums must be PDF’s and can be posted on a USB or Wetransfer to treasurer@ppani.co.uk along with the prints at the 1st stage (1st Jan - 26th Jan). Please name your files with your member number and categories. For example 0121_weddingreportage_01.jpg

 

Competition Rules

Entry into the PPANI Awards is open to qualified members only whose membership is paid in full until the end of the current season.

All entries must have been photographed between 1st of January 2018 & 31st of December 2018.

Each entry into the main competition costs £7.50 per image. Members are given five entries (excluding wedding album) as part of their PPANI membership.

Entry into the Wedding Album category costs £25.

Payment must be made prior to the competition deadline. Failure to do so will result in disqualification from the competition.

All submissions must be shot and posed or directed by the entrant.

Image enhancement techniques (including digital retouching) are permitted but specific rules on each category must be adhered to.

All post production work must be carried out by the entrant.

There is no limit to the number of entries the entrant may submit.

Only one image from each entrant may go forward to the final in each category.

Images produced on photographic workshops & seminars are not permitted.

This includes images produced by delegates and instructors of workshops.

Entries into all categories must be from commissioned work except for Portrait: Open, Portrait: Pets, Creative Landscape and Creative Pictorial which can be commissioned or non-commissioned work.

Entrants may submit each image only once and may not enter the same image in more than one category except for Wedding Album.

Any entries which do not conform to the rules will be withdrawn from the awards judging and no payments returned.

The PPANI reserves the right to disqualify any entry that fails to meet the criteria or, in its opinion, may breach or contravene legal guidelines on public decency or may otherwise bring the entrant or the PPANI into disrepute. Any costs incurred by the PPANI in such a situation will be reimbursed by the entrant.

The PPANI reserves the right to ask for the original file on request.

Entrants agree that any entered image may be used by the PPANI in any of their printed material, publications or electronic media.

By entering this competition, the entrant acknowledges that the employer, client and/or subject have copyright release or model release giving permission for the image to be published or exhibited in connection with these awards and that he/she is the author of the work as defined in the Design, Copyright and Patents Act 1988.

Entries may only be single captured images except in: Wedding Album, Portrait: Open and Creative: Pictorial.

Entries must be 100% photographic, no graphics or text is allowed (text is allowed in the wedding album only). Entrants must have captured every part of an image i.e if a texture is used it must be a texture photographed by the entrant.

Entries to the Wedding Album competition may include front cover designs but entrants must ensure that all company, studio and album manufacturer branding is removed as this will result in disqualification.

The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

The Closing Date for entry into the awards is 12noon on Saturday the 26th of January 2019 for all categories.

Finalists will be announced after the PPANI Judging day on Sunday 3rd of February 2019.

Finalists must supply mounted prints which need to be received by a current PPANI council member no later than Wednesday 15th March 2019. Failure to provide a mounted print by this date will result in disqualification.

Finalist's mounted prints, must be sized in the ratio of 20" x 16" . The longest side of the actual image area must not be smaller than 10 inches in size.

Mounted prints will be judged independently on the night before the awards.

The winner, first runner up and second runner up will be chosen by three experienced judges on the viewing of the mounted prints.

Mounted prints must not contain any markings, identification or information on the front or back other than a sticker on rear with member number, title (if necessary) category and sub category.

Mounted prints will should be collected at the end of the awards evening.

Winners, first and second runners up will be announced and presented with awards at the PPANI Awards Gala on Sunday 24th of March 2019. Anyone not present at the awards will be disqualified and the prize given to the next highest scoring entrant unless arrangements for the prize to be collected are in place.

An overall wedding photographer of the year will be selected from the four winning wedding sections as will a portrait photographer of the year and a creative photographer of the year.

The Francis Neill Trophy will be awarded to the best image in the competition.

The Licentiate Award is for photographers who have been a Licentiate for three years or less. This is an open section. E.g. Any image entered by a photographer who is applicable can win the award. You do not need to separately enter this category. The Licentiate award will be awarded to the photographer with the highest scoring image in the competition.

It is the entrants responsibility to ensure all of the rules in this document are met.

Information correct at time of publication – the PPANI reserve the right to amend any of the above without notice.

 

CATEGORY SPECIFIC RULES

WEDDING CATEGORIES

All wedding category submissions must be created on the actual wedding day. Specifically the day the registry is signed and ceremony takes place. The only exception to this rule is for cultural differences where the wedding runs over consecutive days such as a three day Indian wedding.

All entries in each of the wedding categories must be of commissioned work.

Photographers who work as second shooters may enter images provided that they have obtained permission from the main photographer and that rule 6 from the above general rules has been met.

Wedding Classical

All submissions into this category must be traditional in posing and lighting. Entries into the Wedding Classical must have been created from one single capture. Retouching must be kept to a minimum. (Dodging, burning, colour manipulation, cloning and sharpening are permitted.) Composites are not permitted in this category including adding new skies, rain, lens flares etc from other images, flipping an image is not permitted.

Wedding Contemporary

Submissions in this category may explore the more contemporary side of wedding photography in posing, lighting and image manipulation. Composite images are allowed including added effects from other images, although when using effects such as lens flares, skies and textures (as long as they are photographic), the copyright must be held by the entrant in all parts of the image.

Wedding Reportage

Heavy manipulation is not allowed in this category. (Exposure, colour correction, dodging, burning and cropping are allowed.) Cloning or adding effects are not permitted. Original files may be asked for as proof and must be provided within seven days.

Pre-Wedding & Engagement

Entries in this category must be of a real engaged couple on a commissioned pre-wedding or engagement shoot. Image manipulations are allowed.

Wedding Album

Images must be shot by the entrant. Images taken by a second shooter are not permitted for inclusion in the album.

PORTRAIT CATEGORIES

Newborn & Baby

This category is specifically for babies from birth until their first birthday. (Images where parents or siblings are present may be entered although the newborn must noticeably be the main subject of the image. E.g. The baby held in the arms of the father.) All image manipulation is permitted. Images taken during weddings are not permitted. All entries must be of commissioned work.

Children

This category is specifically for children aged one year old up until their sixteenth birthday. Entries can be of an individual child or of numerous children. Retouching must be kept to a minimum. (Dodging, burning, colour manipulation, small cloning is allowed, flipping an image is not allowed. Composites are not permitted.) Images of bridal parties are not permitted. All entries must be of specific commissioned portrait work.

Family

Entry in this category must have two generations or more. Retouching must be kept to a minimum. (Dodging, burning, colour manipulation, small cloning allowed. Composites & flipping are not permitted.) Images taken during weddings are not permitted. All entries must be of commissioned work.

Pets

Entries must be of pets and not wild animals. Entries can be of a single pet or of multiple pets. Images with owners or people are not permitted. Retouching must be kept to a minimum. (Dodging, burning, colour manipulation, small cloning and sharpening are allowed. Composites and flipping are not permitted.) Entries may be of commissioned or non-commissioned work.

Open

This category is for submissions of entries which do not fall into one of the other named categories listed. Any entry into this category which should have been included in another specific category will be disqualified. (E.g. An image of a pet must be entered into the pet category and not open.) Entries may be of commissioned or non-commissioned work.

 

CREATIVE CATEGORIES

Fashion & Beauty

Clothes, hair, make up, accessories and the beauty of your subject must be the main feature of your entry. All entries must be of commissioned work.

Commercial

Entries may be of any discipline. E.g. Products, events, architecture. All entries must be of commissioned work.

Pictorial

Entries may include: composites, fine-art, personal project, documentary, street photography etc. Entries may be of commissioned or non-commissioned work.

Landscape

The landscape must be the central focus of the image. People are allowed in images but may not be the focus of attention. Entries may be of commissioned or non-commissioned work.
